It takes my mother a while to answer the door, but I consistently ring the doorbell the whole time, hoping she opens the door faster.

I take a step back from expressing my impatience when I hear hasty footsteps behind the door, like she is finally walking towards it. It is accompanied by a subtle grumbling noise. I know my mother would love to chide me for nagging on her doorbell in this manner, but not today. Not if I chided her first. The door sways open.

“I can’t believe you mother! This is so inappropriate” my sullen voice fills the room as I walk in, completely devastated.

I hear my mother give out a humorless chuckle as she walks behind me.

“I think you’re mixing things up, honey”.

She now moves ahead and sinks herself into her tatty gray couch.

“What’s inappropriate is not responding to any of my calls, and then showing up and tugging on my doorbell like you’re been chased by a wild beast”.

I completely ignore my mother’s sentiments.

“I just cannot understand why you want me to marry Prince—”

“I mean, Sean...”

My mother looks at me sternly, obviously dissatisfied with the fact that I would choose to derogatorily address her supposed Prince by his name rather than his title.

“What? I don’t know if he’s a Prince or not?’’ I roll my eyes. “We both know absolutely nothing about his royal background.”

“Lady!” My mother’s voice is thunderous and strident. “He is the heir apparent to a throne.”

“A throne! I hope you hear it when you say it” I am clearly irritated. “What throne is it, mother? Where is this throne? Worse even, who is on this throne as we speak?” My gaze is fixed on my mother—a clear indication that no part of my query is rhetorical.

“It’s a throne in Europe, Lady.” She lowers her voice at the uncertainty “I don’t know, maybe United Kingdom, Spain or anywhere. Does that really matter, a Prince is a Prince.

Orla, my best friend never—”

I cut her in. “Specifically, where in the universe mother?” I lean back and begin to pace the room in frustration “

“But I believe her. She is our savior and the best friend I could ever ask for. Besides, Orla and her son have royal aura all around them, she’s a rich single mom. Plus, she says it’s for security reasons that she can’t disclose.” My mother’s voice rings again, and at her statement, I bury my face in disappointment. That my mother would choose to believe that a ‘superficial’ Prince is the best suitor for her only daughter.

I heave a deep sigh.

“Mom, I am not getting married to Prince Sean.” I let it out fearlessly, but in truth, I am more broken by my own statement than my mother might ever be. She is the only parent that I’ve ever truly known. My closest and truest family. I know this will break her, and I sincerely do not mean to.

“If that’s what you choose, then you can have your way. You can also never speak to me again.
